 Artist's Statement

Maxine Relton's paintings and prints reflect her experiences of life's  personal journeys. she is currently working on a series of images investigating the notion of fragmentation and disconnect that she sees reflected in our present time.

In all her work, drawing plays an essential part in her visual thinking as a way of developing and uncovering her ideas.

She moves across a wide range of art forms, driven by a spirit of discovery and drawings, she moves through a series of visual reflections in which she clarifies her responses and links up her ideas. In her search for a resolution, she often recasts the concept in altered form, renewing and refocusing it in paint, print, photograph, sculpture or written work. In this tentative probing through a succession of changed images, she seeks to transform the unconscious to conscious, to come finally to some form of revelation and self-recognition. The resulting works are a means of questioning and reshaping her perceptions as she constantly seeks to reconnect with her understanding of the world.

From her studio/gallery base in Gloucestershire, Maxine extends her practice into colleges and schools, aiming to inspire young people with original projects of all kinds. She also runs a variety of creative art workshops for people of all ages and abilities, both at home and abroad.

She graduated with a First-Class BA Honours and Distinction from Camberwell College of Art and an MA from the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Her work is held in private collections in many countries, has received a number of awards and has featured in various publications as well as on television.   She has recently been elected as an Academician at the Royal West of England Academy.
