Edward Beale Personal Statement

I have lived in London all my life.  I went to Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy Schools. I am a figurative painter.  It is very important to me to work directly from life.  My style of painting has evolved from a tradition which includes painters such as Maurice de Vlaminck, Sir Matthew Smith, Albert Marquet, David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach and others.  I like the painterly quality in their work.  I use a lot of paint and like the way this impasto quality can give a robust physical presence to my work.  I like painting in situ from nature because I want to convey a sense of immediacy and spontaneity.  Close observation is vital to the way I work but I also want to convey the feeling of a day.  I am not trying for illusionistic painting, where the brush marks are disguised.  Instead I am trying to draw attention to the process of rendering the subject in paint on a surface.

I work from still life subjects and also the urban environment around my home in north Lambeth and the old dockland area near the Greenwich peninsular.  I also love to go out into the countryside and have work in the West Country, Kent, and the Western Isles of Scotland.  Over recent years I have also painted in France and Spain.
